Teaching Raw Materials

Extracurricular places of learning

Due to its diverse geological and natural features and its rich mining history, the GEOPARK offers a variety of extracurricular learning places on topics relevant to raw materials in the Eastern Ore Mountains. These are:

Geotopes

Numerous old quarries and unique rock formations characterise the scenery of the GEOPARK. These are often valuable geotopes and are maintained and signposted by the GEOPARK to ensure their long-term educational value. A complete overview of our geotopes can be found here:

GEO - Info points

In addition to numerous information boards in the area, the GEOPARK offers several GEO info points where geology and raw materials can be experienced interactively on site. They also serve as starting points for excursions, such as the GEO-Infopoint Hetzdorf, which is the starting point for the GEOPARK raw material routes ‘Sandstone - from engineered stone to glass fibre’ and ‘Silver and porphyry’. An overview of all GEO info points can be found here:

GEOPARK raw material routes

The GEOPARK raw material routes are station-based half-day excursion programmes for school classes, which serve to convey the origin and use of raw materials. Each route comes with free accompanying material for teachers, which includes all relevant information on accessibility and the stations of the respective raw material route. This enables the teacher to use the raw materials route independently and individually.

If required, the raw material routes can also be guided by a GEOPARK ranger. Additional workshops organised by the GEOPARK mobile ‘Saxificus’ can also be booked at selected stations along the raw material routes. An overview of all raw material routes and educational programmes can be found here:

Mobile raw material workshops

The GEOPARK mobile ‘Saxificus’ offers a range of mobile workshops for primary and secondary schools, which can be held directly in the schoolyard, in the classroom or in the field. These include two bookable workshops relating to raw materials for secondary schools (‘Your mobile phone and the hunt for raw materials’, ‘The ground beneath your feet’). An overview of all mobile educational programmes can be found here:

GEOPARK teachers training courses

In order to get to know the GEOPARK with its geological features, interesting raw material potential and diverse educational offers, we offer individual teacher training courses for your teaching staff or your subject group. These take place on site and/or at one of our GEO InfoPoints, depending on your requirements. Get in touch with us!
